Are you at risk for chronic health issues?

Do any of the following apply to you?

  • Physical inactivity
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Overweight
  • Tobacco use
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood sugar
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of chronic illness

If so, you are at risk of developing a chronic health issue.  But, there’s hope.  Disease can be prevented — that is, people can be protected from actual or potential health threats and their harmful consequences at four different stages:

  • Primary Prevention –  Prevent the occurrence of disease
  • Secondary Prevention – Arrest the progression of disease
  • Tertiary Prevention – Reduce the negative consequences of established disease
  • Quaternary Prevention – Reduce the negative consequences of unnecessary or excessive medical interventions

Whether you’ve already been diagnosed with a chronic disease, or you feel it won’t be long until you are because of your family history and/or the life you are leading, we are here to help.

Have you been diagnosed with a chronic disease?

Most adults in America have a chronic disease— 6 out of 10 of us.  It’s become the norm because our living environment—the types of foods offered to us for purchase and jobs that encourage us to sit—nurture disease, not health.  But there are things we can do to change that.  We have a choice, an active role to play, in how our lives play out.

If you, or someone you love has recently been diagnosed with a chronic  disease, the time to act is now.  Every forkful of food you eat, and every step you take, determine the course of your health, or illness.  Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and more can be addressed, treated, prevented, and at times even reversed—and it all comes down to these moment by moment behaviors.

Ready to get your life back?

Diabetes has become epidemic in America. It is a devastating disease that wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems. While some families and ethnicities have a greater genetic predisposition to developing diabetes, recent research has shown that those genes can be turned off through key lifestyle changes.

As a population, we see that blood pressure often rises with age.  Epidemiological studies, however, have shown that that need not be the case. If you eat and live according to the tenants of lifestyle medicine, for most people, hypertension need never occur, and if you already have it, there is a good chance that it can resolve.

High cholesterol levels in the blood contribute not only to heart disease but also to vascular disease throughout the body. You may already be on a drug to lower your cholesterol level, but there is so much more you can do to reduce your risk of having a heart attack, stroke and more.

Obesity is often the first step in triggering a cascade of chronic diseases. The weight gradually accumulates, and you think maybe you’ll be lucky and get a pass on disease, but then the diagnoses begin pouring in. Lifestyle medicine can change this trajectory.

Over 10 million adults in the United States have osteoporosis (significantly reduced bone density), with an additional 43.4 million having low bone mass (osteopenia). This is true despite Americans’ high intake of calcium, usually in the form of dairy products or calcium tablets. Women are four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, but key lifestyle behaviors can reduce both the risk of developing osteoporosis as well as any resultant fractures.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women.  Half of all adults in America have it, and about one fourth will die from it.

The good news is that there are some simple, practical steps you can take right now to protect yourself from this insidious and incapacitating disease.
